Strikes are when you knock all 10 pins down on your first ball. You earn 10 pins plus the total of your next two balls as a bonus. That is why consecutive strikes are so valuable — each one multiplies the reward of the ones that follow. A turkey (three strikes in a row) is worth 30 pins for the first frame of the run.
Spares happen when you knock down the remaining pins on your second ball. You earn 10 pins plus the total of your next one ball. Spares are the backbone of a strong game. Consistently picking up your spares keeps your score climbing and builds the kind of confidence that carries through every frame.
Open frames are when pins are still standing after both of your balls. Your score for that frame is simply the total number of pins you knocked down — no bonus. Reducing open frames is one of the fastest ways to raise your average.
The 10th frame is special. If you throw a strike or spare, you earn bonus balls (up to three total) so that your final frame still gets the full bonus it deserves. It is your last opportunity to stack points, and it rewards the bowler who stays focused all the way to the finish.
